Godzilla Concept Art Shows Original MonsterVerse Design

Newly released concept art for Godzilla offers the imposing original take on the monster's design. The film that kicked off the MonsterVerse, Gareth Edwards' Godzilla was released in 2014. That movie marked the second American adaptation of the monster and has since garnered plenty of acclaim for its respectful approach to the material and grounded, suspenseful nature. Starring Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Godzilla managed to revive the monster and initiate a cinematic universe.

The praise given to 2014's Godzilla included an appreciation for the iconic movie monster's design. Though some fans complained that the creature wasn't seen enough, due to the buildup approach taken by the film, the times that Godzilla was on-screen were thrilling and featured excellent effects. Edwards' Godzilla updated the monster's look slightly, but kept the aspects that made the original Toho version so successful. Godzilla's design in 2014 retained that basic look, and had large dorsal fins across his back and tail. His massive size adds to the forbidding nature of his appearance, and his blue atomic breath makes an appearance in the movie. Despite the success of this design, it's always interesting to know what could have been.

Baker's mention of a lengthy Skype call with Edwards while they completed the design process indicates the director's dedication to creating a satisfying look for Godzilla. The resulting design is frightening, with a more reptilian face and mouth, which offer the monster additional ferocity. The dynamic nature of the drawings is impressive and lends the famed creature an air of constant momentum, which makes him seem ready to strike. Of course, the design that ended up being used in th 2014 film was extremely well done, and a fitting tribute to the legacy of Godzilla. Subsequent MonsterVerse movies have tweaked Godzilla's look, earning new spikes on his back and longer claws in King of Monsters, and the former of which were adjusted again in Godzilla vs. Kong. With each director putting their own small spin on the monster's design, it's exciting to consider how Godzilla will evolve in his next on-screen appearance.

A sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong has been set for March 2024. Fans of the MonsterVerse will also be able to dive back in with Apple TV+'s Godzilla series, which was filming this summer. Though not much is known about the series, it is said to take place after the events of the 2014 film. Perhaps Godzilla's appearance will resemble the original concept art more closely, since the series will directly follow Edwards' take on the legendary creature.

'Godzilla vs. Kong' Sequel's Working Title Teases an Origin Story for the Massive Monsters

The highly-anticipated sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong is using “Origins” as a working title, teasing that the upcoming movie will explore the inception of the Titans and the ancient civilization that inhabited Hollow Earth. The Australian news report 7News Brisbane revealed the news just a few days after the sequel began filming. The news was also confirmed through a set photo released by the Twitter account KDM_Monsters.

During the events of Godzilla vs. Kong, the powerful primate journeyed into Hollow Earth to find a lizard-killing weapon he could use to show Godzilla who’s the king of the jungle. During this underground adventure, we learned that humans used to live in Hollow Earth many millennia ago, building colossal temples to worship Kong’s ancestors. In one particular scene, we even see a throne room with a small door in the base of a chair, indicating that humanity lived side by side with monsters in the past.

Since the release of Godzilla vs. Kong, fans have been wondering where the MonsterVerse would go next, and the origins of Hollow Earth seem to be an exciting concept to explore in a theatrical release. At the end of Godzilla vs. Kong, the two titular colossi split reign over Earth, with Godzilla remaining the king of monsters on the surface while Kong remained free in the jungles of Hollow Earth. So, if the sequel is exploring the past of Hollow Earth, it’s most likely we will see the giant gorilla once again.

While Legendary and Warner Bros. haven't made a statement about the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel's official name, a working title is usually related to the themes or main plot points of a given production. So, by setting “Origins” as a temporary title, the MonsterVerse gives us a massive clue about where the franchise is going.

It would also make sense to focus the sequel on Kong since Godzilla is already set to return in another MonsterVerse production. Apple TV+ is currently developing a Godzilla and the Titans series focused on the many monsters that never got in the spotlight in the previous movies. The series will follow a family trying to survive in a world filled with monsters right after the destruction of San Francisco at the end of Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Godzilla and Titans Series Taps 'Wandavision's Matthew Shakman to Direct

Apple TV+ has been killing it with their exclusive content lately. One of the most exciting upcoming releases is Legendary’s untitled live-action Godzilla series which was announced earlier this year. Now we know the first director who’ll be working on this monstrous series. Apple TV + announced that WandaVision’s Matthew Shakman will be directing the first two episodes of the series. The director will also serve as an executive producer on the project.

The series takes place in Legendary's MonsterVerse that has consisted of 2014’s Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Godzilla vs. Kong. The series takes place after the “thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real, the untitled Monsterverse series will explore one family's journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.” Legendary Television is producing the project and will be executive produced by co-creators Chris Black and Matt Fraction. Black is also the showrunner for the series. Other executive producers include Safehouse Pictures’ Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell as well as Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita for Toho Co. Ltd..

Shakman has been a very acclaimed director in the television space in the last handful of years. He directed the entirety of Marvel Studios’ WandaVision which was one of the most critically acclaimed series of last year and Shakman received an Emmy nomination for Directing for a Limited Series. Shakman also directed the pilot for Hulu’s The Great where he received another Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. The director’s other notable credits include two episodes of Game of Thrones, Succession, The Boys, Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Mad Men, and Fargo. Shakman is currently attached to direct the upcoming Star Trek sequel as well.

There is so much talent behind this project and Shakman’s involvement only adds to that. The director has worked on a wide range of shows with varying tones. Shakman has a great sense of character and scale, which is perfect for a show involving Godzilla. The weakest part of this universe has been the human characters so hopefully, Shakman can be a part of changing that narrative for this franchise. Legendary’s MonsterVerse felt like it was winding down before the release of Godzilla vs. Kong last year. However, the success of that epic film opened the universe up to exciting new projects like this upcoming series. Legendary is also working on a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong, which recently found its star in Dan Stevens.

Until we get more news on this upcoming Apple TV+ series, like a pending release date, you can catch up on all of Legendary's MonsterVerse on HBO Max right now.

‘Godzilla Vs. Kong’ Sequel Gets 2024 Releasing date || Movies || Monsterverse

It looks like King Kong is ready for a rematch, as Warner Bros. announced Godzilla vs. Kong's untitled sequel is coming to theaters in 2024, as Variety reports. So far, little is known about the next installment in Legendary’s MonsterVerse, but now that we have a release date, it shouldn’t be long to find out which new giant beast will face Earth’s two mightiest defenders.

Released in 2021, while the whole world was still recovering from the worst effects of the pandemics, Godzilla vs. Kong crossed the $100 million mark at the domestic box office while also available on HBO Max. Warner Bros. quickly realized the obvious: people like to watch giant monsters beating each other to a pulp on the biggest screen possible. So, it didn’t take long for Legendary to announce they were working on a sequel.

The untitled sequel to Godzilla Vs. Kong is expected to start filming in Australia this year, but Legendary and Warner Bros. have been very secretive about their plans for the MonsterVerse. So far, all we can say for sure is that The Guest’s Dan Stevens was cast in an undisclosed role. Godzilla Vs. Kong sequel will also reunite Stevens with director Adam Wingard, who’s back to helm the mysterious film after directing the first. Wingard was also behind The Guest, which earned critical acclaim for himself and for Stevens’ performance.

Godzilla Vs. Kong was the culmination of a series of films Legendary released since 2014’s Godzilla. Besides presenting a new powerful version of the giant lizard to the world, Legendary’s MonsterVerse also had its own take on the colossal ape with Kong: Skull Island. Then, Legendary released dozens of Titans on Earth in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, changing their universe forever. Finally, Godzilla Vs. Kong put the two kings on a collision path that gave us a definitive answer of who’s the strongest kaiju, with Godzilla getting the best over Kong. Of course, in the movie’s explosive finale, the two creatures join forces to destroy a human-made monstrosity called Mechagodzilla.

It’s unknown if Godzilla and King Kong will face off again in the sequel, but at the end of the first crossover film, each creature took over one realm for himself. While Godzilla remains the unbeatable king of Earth’s monsters, King Kong is now free to roam Hollow Earth, an underground kingdom that his ancestors previously occupied. Godzilla Vs. Kong also teased the ancient history of Hollow Earth, and that humanity had worshipped giant monsters thousands of years before the movie’s events. That means a sequel could also look at the past to expand the mythology.

Besides a sequel for Godzilla Vs. Kong, Legendary's MonsterVserse is also planning the release of a Titans TV show. The new series will allow fans to see more of the other gigantic creatures who roam the world since Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

The untitled sequel for Godzilla Vs. Kong will come crashing into theaters on March 15, 2024.
