As a trilogy, Guardians of the Galaxy took many liberties with the source material that changed the origins of certain characters while increasing their narrative importance. For example, Rocket, who initially had no ties to the High Evolutionary, was now the villain's creation and his experiences with him changed Rocket forever. However, in the case of Peter Quill, he went from the son of the tyrant King of Spartax to the son of Ego, The Living Planet, now labeled as a Celestial entity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 may not have had its focus on Peter Quill, but it didn't shy away from giving him the necessary moments as a leader and character who dealt with loss. That said, from the second movie until Guardians 3, there was still a question of whether his status as a Celestial was intact. Though the obvious answer would be no due to the death of Ego, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 proved that the reality of his genetics may be more complex.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's ending provides a clever solution for a potential problem involving the cosmic team's role in Avengers: Secret Wars. After Avengers: Endgame left the bar extremely high, the MCU has been left with the responsibility of matching the epic scale of the Infinity Saga's conclusion with Avengers: Secret Wars, which not only could gather together all past and present heroes but also their multiversal variants. However, some obstacles could arise before that happens.

The original Guardians of the Galaxy go on a final adventure together during the beginning of the MCU's Phase 5, which barely reaches the Multiverse Saga's midpoint. With a new Avengers team yet to take shape and the Council of Kangs' threat looming on the horizon, the Guardians' definitive farewell could have seemed premature, as their absence would have been deeply felt in Avengers: Secret Wars. Fortunately, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's post-credits scene confirms that the end of the trilogy won't take the Guardians completely out of the picture yet.

Avengers: Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars Need The Guardians of the Galaxy

Back in Phase 2, the Guardians of the Galaxy may have seemed like an odd addition to the MCU given their lack of popularity in comparison to the Avengers. But once established, it became quite clear that the Guardians were just as important as Earth's Mightiest Heroes, as they had personal connections to Thanos and plenty of motivations to save the universe. While their link to Kang the Conqueror isn't as strong, the Guardians of the Galaxy are still a key part of the MCU after Thanos' defeat, and not featuring them in the Avengers' final battle against Kang would be a disservice to the team.

GOTG 3 Proves The Original Guardians Don’t Need To Die Or Return

James Gunn has made it clear that his vision for the Guardians of the Galaxy has always taken the shape of a trilogy, which means that Guardians of the Galaxy 4 is highly unlikely. However, that doesn't mean that the Guardians of the Galaxy will stop playing a major role in the MCU after Phase 5. Just like Tony Stark kept his role as one of the Infinity Saga's protagonists long after Iron Man 3, the Guardians of the Galaxy can continue to evolve and influence the franchise in other movies and shows.

Cosmic MCU titles are always great opportunities to feature Rocket Raccoon's new Guardians of the Galaxy team, but Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars can be the main movies that serve as a direct continuation to their MCU debut in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's first post-credit scene. After all, Avengers: Infinity War already had a similar impact on the original Guardians, as they shared the spotlight with the Avengers and experienced key events like Gamora's death and Star-Lord's ill-advised retaliation. Likewise, characters such as Adam Warlock, Phyla, and Cosmo can perfectly develop their full-fledged character arcs throughout the next Avengers movies.

As Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 begins its journey into theaters, many will be eager to know how many post-credits scenes they should be sticking around for.

Post-credits scenes may be a recognized Marvel Studios staple, but they're anything but predictable. Not only does the number of end-credit tags vary from project to project but so does the nature of their content. 

At times, they're used to further the plot or tease future characters, such as Avengers: Infinity War's set-up for Captain Marvel; at others, they're a last laugh, like The Avengers' famous shwarma scene. 

James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy projects have been famously unpredictable on this front, with each release up until now sporting a different total.

Guardians Vol. 3 Post-Credits Scene Count Confirmed

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 contains two post-credits scenes, with the first falling after the mid-credits and the second following the rolling credits - a fairly standard pattern for a Marvel Studios movie.

This is the same number as fellow Phase 5 MCU film, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, which also included two, a departure from last November's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever which only included one. 

The original Guardians of the Galaxy film also had two post-credits scenes, which jumped to a whopping five for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 - one of which foreshadowed the creation of Vol. 3's Adam Warlock. 

On the other hand, Disney+'s Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special only had one hilarious scene of Groot being decorated as a Christmas tree.

Guardians 3's mid-credits scene set up a future for the Guardians - likely under a new director with James Gunn now over at DC Studios - through the introduction of a whole new line-up for the cosmic team.

The movie's second stinger featured a simple moment of Chris Pratt's Peter Quill back on Earth, eating cereal with his grandpa - who was holding a newspaper referencing Kevin Bacon's "Alien Abduction" in The Holiday Special.

The uneventful moment was followed by a wipe to white, and text promising "The Legendary Star-Lord will Return" - and The Direct has six ideas for when that will likely come in the MCU.

Why Guardians Vol. 3's Post-Credits Scenes Are Different

With any Marvel film, post-credits info is a major topic amongst die-hards as they can reveal more of the MCU's overarching narrative. 

One of the most recent examples is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings end-credits tag, which connected Shang-Chi to Captain Marvel, Bruce Banner, and Wong while also teasing something bigger at play. 

However, the question of Vol. 3's end-credit content is different, as this movie is focused on closing the book for this group of Guardians, while also opening the doors to a future for this whole new roster.

Unlike other Marvel Studios movies, these scenes were firmly contained to the Guardians' own corner of the MCU, and not setting up larger stories with the Multiverse and Jonathan Majors' Kang.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters on Friday, May 5. 

From the start, writer/director James Gunn made it clear that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would close out the spacefaring heroes' journey and be his last time working with these characters. Similarly, Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldaña both stated that Vol. 3 would see them bid farewell to their performances as Drax and Gamora. Vol. 3 lives up to that promise by ending with the team disbanding as they move on to different personal journeys.

Gamora returns to her new friends among the Ravagers, Drax and Nebula (Karen Gillan) stay on Knowhere to look after refugees from the High Evolutionary's experiments, Mantis (Pom Klementieff) decides to find her purpose in the universe alongside a pair of Abilisks, and Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) decides to take some time off from being a hero to reconnect with his roots back on Earth. The only members of the original team left are Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel). However, as the post-credits stingers show, the galaxy isn't without its protectors, and there are still more adventures to be had by its heroes.

The group debates their favorite music from Earth, but Rocket gets the final say when he plays Redbone's "Come and Get Your Love" on Quill's Zune, the same song Quill danced to in the opening credits of the original Guardians of the Galaxy. However, their conversation is interrupted by a horde of creatures charging toward a terrified village. The new Guardians table their discussion and stand together to defend the village, showing that while the heroes may be unfamiliar, the Guardians live on to protect the galaxy.

Of all the movies released in theaters in April 2023, none of them are currently available to stream, but The Super Mario Bros. Movie will land on Peacock in June before moving to Netflix in late 2023. Luckily, May will bring some of the most anticipated movies of the year, with a variety of titles for all ages and tastes, as are the third and final adventure of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the MCU, an action thriller by Robert Rodriguez, a biopic about the rise and fall of the company behind the first smartphone, the tenth Fast & Furious movie, and the live-action version of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. In a new clip from Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3, Star-Lord appears to drop a certain swear word, which would be the first of its kind in the MCU.

A new clip from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has just dropped, and it may be hiding the first-ever use of the F-word in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel Studios' official YouTube shared the 45-second scene from the upcoming movie on Friday, April 21. It features the full team, aside from Rocket Raccoon, leaving a house and arguing about the old Earth car that several characters are getting into. Nebula, played by Karen Gillan, has trouble unlocking the passenger side door, leading Chris Pratt's Peter Quill to yell, "Open the [bleep] door!" Although the word is censored, context suggests that it's one which hasn't yet been used in any of the MCU's movies or TV series.

How and why will Gamora return in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after her death in Avengers: Infinity War? There are a few reasons. 

Zoe Saldana's Gamora was featured in several shots of Marvel Studios' tear-jerker of a trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. 

Skilled assassin and daughter of Thanos, Gamora was a key member of the Guardians family - and the love interest of Peter Quill - prior to Thanos sacrificing her for the soul stone. So the question is, how is Gamora back for Vol. 3? And why is she seemingly back with the Guardians? 

Gamora's Guardians Vol. 3 Comeback Explained

While Peter Quill and Gamora's feelings for one another are teased in both prior Guardians films, audiences don't see them fully embrace their relationship until Avengers: Infinity War. 

Why it takes the two so long to reach that point has to do with their similar, traumatic pasts. Thanos killed Gamora's mother and half the population of her planet before forcibly adopting her, turning her into an assassin. 

As for Quill, he was traumatized by the loss of his mother and then kidnapped by Yondu to be raised by the Ravagers. Then, in Vol. 2, he discovers that his real father, Ego, killed his mother and only wanted to use him.

Both have suffered loss and have difficulty with trust. 

While they seem to have overcome some of those issues in Infinity War, it's also in this same film that Thanos takes Gamora and sacrifices her on Vormir. 

Therefore, this version of Gamora, with all of her history with the Guardians and Peter, is killed; and, once again, Peter has suffered a huge loss. 

However, in Avengers: Endgame, the Avengers' use of time travel, which also involved Nebula, allows Thanos and Gamora from 2014 to discover the MCU present. 

Thanos then uses both past and present Nebulas to allow himself and Gamora to travel to 2023, the present-day MCU. 

Even though this Gamora doesn't have the same experiences as her Infinity War self, she does turn against Thanos and learn of her alternate life with the Guardians and Peter. 

After helping the Avengers in that final Endgame battle, she disappears by the end of the film. 

This is why she's not in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special but is able to return in Vol. 3. 

Gamora's Role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

From what fans know of Vol. 3, the Guardians will be threatened by the sociopathic High Evolutionary and likely the Sovereign from Vol. 2. 

Since both are obsessed with perfection and superiority, a clash with the misfit Guardians makes sense, especially since Rocket appears to be one of the High Evolutionary's past projects. 

Given that Gamora and her sister Nebula were cybernetically enhanced by Thanos, she too may be on a collision course with these villains, leading to a team-up with the Guardians. 

The latest Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 trailer offered a small glimpse at her role, including her helping an injured Drax in what appears to be a prison escape. 

But perhaps the most interesting shot is Gamora in what appears to be a three-point landing pose, otherwise known as a hero pose. 

In most MCU films, a character landing in this position is a visual confirmation that they're now a hero. 

But the real reason behind her role is that Vol. 3 is James Gunn's final bow within the MCU and the conclusion of his Guardians trilogy. 

Not only is it right that Saldana plays a part in this final chapter, but her character's arc - as well as that of Peter Quill's - is still incomplete. Again, the 2014 Gamora that's now at large in the MCU has never experienced family or a relationship with Peter. 

As for Peter himself, he has - yet again - lost who he loves most; and while he's carrying on with the Guardians in the Disney+ special, something is still missing. 

Where Will Vol. 3 Leave Star-Lord & Gamora?

James Gunn, the threequel's trailer, and even Zoe Saldana herself have warned audiences that this final film is going to be emotional and that not everyone will survive.

Whether Peter and Gamora's story ends in yet another loss remains to be seen; but if not, the two will likely have to deal with the loss of other Guardians at some point. 

Footage of Gamora in the trailer, including that hero pose, suggest that this 2014 Gamora may undergo her own hero origin story in addition to coming to terms with old wounds. 

As always, it will be interesting to see how Gunn will incorporate this version of the character into the Guardians' last stand as he brings this beloved franchise to a close. 

But even though much of the film - and Gamora's story - remains a mystery, it's sure to be more powerful, heartfelt, and poignant than audiences expect.
